Gabriola Softball Association: House Rules
Welcome to the Gabriola Softball Association! To ensure fair play and a safe, enjoyable experience for everyone, please familiarize yourself with our house rules. We follow NSA rules with specific additions and exceptions outlined below.

Essential rules for every player
Whether you are a new or returning player, these fundamental rules are crucial for understanding gameplay and avoiding penalties. Please read them carefully to ensure a smooth season.

Team composition and player borrowing
Teams must have a minimum of four women to play without penalty. If a team has only three women, they can still play but will incur an automatic out. To avoid a forfeit, teams may borrow one registered player. However, borrowing a player cannot be used to avoid an automatic out.

Safety bags and home plate rules
For first base, we utilize an orange safety bag. Runners not advancing to second base must use the orange bag and may run through, turning towards the fence without leaving the field of play. Runners intending to go to second base must use the white bag. At home plate, we use a safety line. No runner should be touching home plate, and any contact with a catcher will result in an automatic out.
Bat safety and conduct
Player safety is paramount. There is to be no throwing of the bat. Players who throw a bat will receive one warning. If the offense occurs again, the player will be ejected from the game.
Common rule clarifications
Here are some frequently asked questions and clarifications to common rule misunderstandings:
- A team may get five runs over the score of their opponent. If they are already ahead in points, they may score up to five additional runs. If they are behind, they may catch up and then get five runs over their opponent's score.
- A player running for home plate must continue if they touch or cross the commitment line (point of no return), which is established 20 feet from home plate on the third baseline.
